Synopsis (From Goodreads)

Maire is a baker with an extraordinary gift: she can infuse her treats with emotions and abilities, which are then passed on to those who eat them. She doesn’t know why she can do this and remembers nothing of who she is or where she came from.

When marauders raid her town, Maire is captured and sold to the eccentric Allemas, who enslaves her and demands that she produce sinister confections, including a witch’s gingerbread cottage, a living cookie boy, and size-altering cakes.

During her captivity, Maire is visited by Fyel, a ghostly being who is reluctant to reveal his connection to her. The more often they meet, the more her memories return, and she begins to piece together who and what she really is—as well as past mistakes that yield cosmic consequences.

My Review

After reading The Paper Magician I was hooked on Charlie N. Holmberg. Her writing style is just absolutely magical. She has a way of just engulfing me in the tale!

Magic Bitter, Magic Sweet is no less magical. I loved this story. Holmberg kept me guessing throughout the whole thing! I couldn’t even imagine what Maire really was, where she had come from, and who the heck was Fyel!?!

The characters of Fyel and Maire were really hashed out. I didn’t really have much feelings for anyone else in the story. This was obviously about Maire and in addition Fyel. However, that was okay, because no one else really mattered so much. Allemas was a total contradictory mystery, which was amazing. He was so unique, and I was kept wondering about him.

I don’t want to give too much away, but really that ending!!! It broke my heart. I had absolutely no expectations on what would have unfolded until it happened, and then it was so shocking.

I definitely recommend this book!

Happy Reading,

Jackie
